Over the past few days, we have ventured around Ang Mo Kio to find and learn about the different Primary Schools. Alas, we have found four schools that have a rich history and background.
Welcome to our Heritage Trail - Jing Shan Primary School, St. Nicholas Primary School, Da Qiao Primary School and Teck Ghee Primary School.



JING SHAN PRIMARY SCHOOL

It's History
According to Jing Shan Primary School's website (2015), the school was formerly known as Cheng San School, it began in August 1945 and it was established as a Chinese-medium school in Cheng Sua Lai. 

HOW? 
Founded by Chinese businessmen and members of the rural community.

WHY?
They saw a need for a school in the locality to provide education to its young. 

WHERE?
Vacate from Chin San Village during the 1950s to make space for the development of Serangoon Gardens estate. The school was then relocated to Lark Sye which is along the current Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.

Due to the development of Ang Mo Kio new town, it moved in the 1970s. Around 1982 it was then known as a full government school and was then renamed to its known name now which is Jing Shan Primary School.

Special Features

Based on ex-students experiences, the teachers are patient, nice and
passionate about their job and because of this, he had enjoyed learning in
their lessons.

Convenient as there are a couple of buses that passes by the school.

Known for its holistic and integrated arts education programme, which will
ensure that your child develops in all aspects.




ST. NICHOLAS PRIMARY SCHOOL

It's History

Mother Matilde, Sr
Apollinaire, Sr Gregory and Sr Gaetan travelled from France to Penang in 1852, to set up schools and orphanages. 

In 1854, they travelled to Singapore to build schools, however, in the 1800s, Singapore experienced lack of funds and other challenges. Despite difficulties, Mother Matilde, Sr Apollinaire, Sr Gregory and Sr Gaetan started building schools and orphanages for girls and managed to overcome the challenges.

 The Sisters were women of great faith, daring and courageous. They were convinced to help to educate girls, especially the poor and disadvantage. They welcomed any child regardless of race, language or religion.

It is a Government-Aided School. 

One of the best primary school in Sinagpore.

CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ Primary School focuses on molding their students to become someone that has leadership qualities and someone that has a graceful heart. Through these past achievements, it shows that the girls from St Nicks are determined to achieve awards for the school. St Nicks wants their students to be Women with Grace and Strength.


According to St. Nicholas's school website (2014), their mission is the creation of a Christ
centred school community where all work together for the promotion of
truth, justice, freedom, and love, with special reference to the needs of
persons who are disadvantaged in any way. 



DA QIAO PRIMARY SCHOOL

It's History

Da Qiao Primary School was officially opened on 11 January 1936 at North
Bridge Road. It was a Chinese language public school that served the
Education needs of the community and provided education opportunities
for children from the low incomed families. It was known as
Tai Keou School (公立大侨学校) then.

refers to Dabu, the province where the founder came from, and refers
to the Chinese immigrants in Singapore at that time. The founder
Mr. Qiu Lin Rong (丘林容先生) also served as the Principal of the school at
That time.

In 1939, the school shifted to Lim Tua Tow Road at Hougang (). The
school was closed down during the Japanese Occupation. After the
Japanese Occupation, the school re-opened at Lorong Tai Seng in 1947.
It relocated to Jalan Paya in 1964 and functioned there until the end of
1980.

In 1981, Da Qiao Primary School was established as a government school
in the residential estate of Ang Mo Kio. The new school started operating
in its new building at 10 Ang Mo Kio St 54 in January 1982 with 38 classes
and a pupil enrolment of about 1200. 

As a result of PRIME, a Ministry of Education school rebuilding
programme, Da Qiao Primary moved to its current campus at 8 Ang Mo Kio
St 54 on 8 December 1999.

The school merged with Chong Boon Primary on 1 Jan 2000 to form the
present Da Qiao Primary. (The Da Qiao Story, n.d.)

Da Qiao primary school is interesting as it has rich history to share with the students and parents. Parents should enroll their child to this school because they can learn about the uprising of this school as well as the education system is sg. This is because the students can learn things such as the merging of schools.
Special Features

The letters ‘d’ and ‘q’ in the crest are the initials of Da Qiao.
The interlocking letters ‘d’ and ‘q’ represent unity.

The circle symbolizes harmony.

Teck Ghee Primary School

Its History
 The old Teck Ghee Primary School merged with Chong Li Primary
School in December 2002 to form the present Teck Ghee Primary School.

Teck Ghee Primary School officially opened in April 1989 by Mr Lee
Yoke Suan, the then MP of Cheng San CC.
Hsien Loong was its Guest of Honour during the celebration. The pupil enrolment of the school
increased to about 2000. In year 2000, it once again relocated to a holding
premises at 6 Ang Mo Kio Street 44.

The new Teck Ghee Primary School started functioning at 1 Ang Mo Kio
Street 32 in January 2003 under the leadership of our new Principal, Mr
Tan Say Kiat. (TGPS, 2017)

Achievements

- Honourable Mention was given to one of the students in Primary 5 for the National Mathematical Olympiad of
Singapore 2014.
- 1st in South-zone Inter-primary school Rope Skipping Championship for the Senior Girls Division
